What are the best Pagan, Wiccan or Witch related books to read?

Ever wondered which books are the best ones to read to find out more about your chosen path, which direction you should be heading in and what you should be learning?

When starting out on a new path, or brushing up on your knowledge, many people ask what would be the best books to read or the best website/blog to read. I read quite a few different books (or at least part of them) before I came to the conclusion that some of them were really not for me.

We are all different and what resonates with one person may hold no interest at all for someone else. We are often advised when new to our path, be it in the ways of Wicca, starting out as fledgling Witch or indeed just trying to find our Pagan way, to read as much as possible. Read, read, read and then read some more!

This is true up to a point, it is important to read and quench that thirst for knowledge as much as you can. However, you will not gain much by just reading anything and everything. An in-depth book on one subject may be something you feel you should read but if it is not written about something you have a interest in, then it will just become a chore, be boring and probably be left unfinished.

In my experience it’s much better to read a range of concise books or ones that cover a fairly general view on a wide range of topics under the Pagan umbrella. This will give you a much better understanding of what direction your path is most likely to take. Then you can look at reading matter more specific to the areas you are drawn to. Our paths are rarely straight and often cross, so you may well come back to subjects you dismissed previously.

If money is a consideration when choosing reading matter, try secondhand books, kindle editions, online stores or swapping with other like minded souls. Bargain stores and craft shops are also other good places to pick up excellent books at lower prices. You can get a good idea on what the content of a book is like by reading the synopsis and more importantly the Book reviews, they are worth the extra few minutes it takes before making a purchase.

So in answer to my original question of “What are the best books to read” my answer would be “The ones that hold your interest”. Use your intuition about what is right for you. You may find many books contradict each other, some dictate you must follow certain rules to the letter, some that you can adjust things to suit what works for you. One Author might say you should perform particular aspects of your craft one way, while another author says it should be the total opposite. As with any subject you will find some authors that are just writing anything they can think of for quick profit, decide for yourself whether or not the Authors are indeed giving out good information and helpful advice or for you.
