De-stressing a stressful Witch!

It’s not just been one of those days, it’s been one of those months! My normal placid exterior had started to melt and had definitely lost some of it’s shine.

Life just does that to you sometimes and the phrase “It never rains but it pours” comes to mind. I’m sure I’m not the only one that has felt like this now and again and when you’re in one of these ruts it can feel like you’ve never been out of it.

So what to do about it? Well for me crafting usually helps. However, I’ve been crafting my fingers to the bone this week and the swear words in my head are still having trouble remaining where they are! Meditation can help but sometimes it’s just not enough. Time for something a little stronger and I don’t mean alcohol (already tried that earlier in the week and it’s only ever a very temporary fix).

The answer is 42! Yes, “42, the answer to life, the universe and everything” and also the number of miles from my house to the nearest beach.

Ahh the beach, What’s not to love? Since ancient times, we have associated healing and transformational properties with water. Our brains react positively to water, just being near it can calm and even help heal us mentally. The gentle repetitive sound of the ocean gives our brains and our senses a rest from all the over stimulation of everyday life. Just watching and listening to the ocean can put us into a mild meditative state.

The colour blue generally evokes feelings of calm and peace. The smell of the ocean breeze enhances and brings about a calmer state of mind, possibly due to the negative ions in the air that you’re breathing in.

In the summer there is also the added benefit of walking barefoot in the sand. In February, I prefer to look for hag stones or wishing stones. Now this really does have a calming effect on the mind. Just to amble along in your own world looking for interesting stones. The mind gets so absorbed in looking at all the different colours, shapes and types of stones, mingled with shells, seaweeds and the occasional pieces of driftwood or sea glass, that it totally forgets about any stress or worries. You sometimes even find things that others have left to make you smile.

The winter beach – Not another soul in sight

Another advantage of going to the beach in February is that other people were very few and far between. Most of the time I had my own little stretch of beach all to myself Not a muggle in sight…. (except hubby but he has special dispensation) ….. bliss.

I also managed to find quite a few hag stones on my walk – hubby found some too, he has also discovered how relaxing this past time is.

Ahhh I needed that. I always feel so much better after a trip to the beach.

Be it the blue of the ocean, the green of the countryside or a dark velvet, starlit sky, don’t forget to take time out now and then and go somewhere that makes your soul happy.
